The first full length release on Albert’s Favourites was the Jonny Drop’s beat-tape debut, Sub Plot. A hugely popular journey through the DJs record collection, sampling and cutting in his unique style.
The single Mindfield/This Is The One won love and support from DJ royalty like Mr Thing and Nightmares On Wax, to Lauren Laverne and Huey Morgan on BBC Radio 6 Music and was the perfect kick start to the label founded by Jonny, Adam Scrimshire and Dave Koor.

Since then, Jonny released his debut album The Only Sound, featuring performances from Pendletons/Myron & E main man Eric Boss, London jazz hero Tamar “Collocutor” Osborn and First Word records artist Sarah Williams White. He also gifted the world some heavy jazz funk as drummer for The Expansions and delivered DJ mixes and live sets in abundance and a drum library record for the King Underground imprint. All the while turning out eye catching artwork for label artists Rōnin Arkestra, Scrimshire and more.

During isolation, Jonny has continued to uplift people with an essential series of live streams from his record room, while producing a, currently, quite secret collaborative double LP. But in his need to do something more immediate, it really felt like the right time for a new entry in the Sub Plot series.

Here we have 25 tracks of dusty, crunchy vinyl cut-ups and subversions, mining the darker corners of his extensive collection. Spanning from disco and boogie to R&B and vintage, cinematic atmospherics. All of it scattered through with interviews, monologue and archival reportage that cleverly gives an insight into the artists state of mind after eight weeks of restricted creativity (especially having no access to his drums).

In his own words:

“Since my last album ‘The Only Sound’, I’ve been working to finish a very exciting full length collaborative album with a very special vocalist. When lockdown happened I thought to myself, it’s about time I got something new out to you in the interim. Here it is… Subplot II – a beat tape created in the first month of the Covid-19 pandemic. To be filed somewhere inbetween original beats and an elaborate dj mix, this next volume in the subplot series provides a brief visit to some of the more odd corners of my record collection, sprinkled with audio interviews from some legends in the game.”

Only recently discovered this and am asking myself why I had never heard of Yussef Dayes in particular... live this whole album. Such musicianship and a fresh/modern take on classic jazz forms. Massive respect to the musicians Pilot Fish

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
